The Uniqueness of the Christian Experience

     Return to Front Page

Christian experience is the state or condition produced in the mental, moral and spiritual nature of mankind as a result of the  establishment of a personal relationship with Christ and it must be relevant to all phases of human life.

Bernard Ramm  in Protestant Christian Evidences (Moody Press) states that:
"Whatever passes as true must have direct tangency with life and experience. It is questionable if Christianity would have kept the hold it does have on hundreds of thousands of people if it lacked direct application with peoples lives and experiences, even though it creates such imposing theological and philosophical debate".

If we consider Christianity is true, it must have relevancy to every significant aspect of the universe and human experience.  Christianity fails if it is not applicable to life on this earth.  Conversely, the Christian experience is of no significance if the life, death and resurrection of Christ are not factual events in history.  The two are interdependent and inseparable. However, evidence for the validity of both is overwhelming.

The Belief in a Christ who’s impact on the world is the same today as it was all those years ago is where it all begins. Through Him movements have been set in motion which have made in society for what mankind believes to be its best-in the inward transformation of human lives, in political order, in the  production and distribution of goods to meet the physical needs of men, in healing physical ills, in the relations between races and between nations, in art, in religion and in the achievements of the human intellect.

Gauged by the consequences which have followed, the birth, life, death, and resurrection of  Jesus have been the most important events in the history of man in healing physical ills, in the relations between races and between nations, in art, in religion and in the achievements of the human intellect.  Gauged by the consequences which have followed, the birth, life, death, and resurrection of  Jesus have been the most important events in the history of man.

TESTIMONIES OF CHRISTIAN EXPERIENCE

Many people have the impression that Christian conversion is a psychologically induced experience brought about by brainwashing the subject with persuasive words and emotional presentations of Christian "myths." Some have even suggested that the Christian experience can be explained on the basis of conditioned reflexes.  They claim that anyone, after repeated exposure to Christian thought, can be caught in a type of "spiritual hypnosis" in which he will mechanically react in certain ways under certain conditions. The "why" of Christian experience is the person of Jesus Christ.  This fact distinguishes Christianity from all other religions, for it is only Christianity that provides a totally new source of power for living.
Furthermore, this "object" of our faith is not some philosophical invention of man's mind. but a physical, historical reality. The God of Christianity is not an imperceptible, unknown God, but one who has specific attributes and characteristics, which are revealed in the Scriptures. Unlike some of the religions devoted to a mystical god, Christians put their faith in a God who may be identified and who made Himself known in history by sending His  Son, Jesus Christ.
Christians can believe that their sins have been forgiven forgiveness was accomplished and recorded in history by means of the crucifixion.
Christians can believe that Christ is now living within because He was raised from the dead in history.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ 2000 years ago has transformed of the lives of millions of people. Although they are from every walk of life and from all the nations of the world, they are changed in remarkably similar ways. From the most brilliant professor to the most ignorant peasant, when you   Christ, life begins to change.

One of the most powerful men in history wrote this. :-

“I know men and I can tell you that Jesus Christ is not a man. Superficial minds see a resemblance between Christ and the founders of empires and the gods of other religions. That resemblance does not exist. Everything in Christ astonishes me. His Spirit overawes me and his will confounds me. He is truly a being by Himself. The nearer I approach, the more carefully I examine everything that is above me of a grandeur that overpowers. His religion is a revelation from an intelligence that is not of man.”

“I search in vain in history to find the similar to Jesus Christ, or anything which can approach the gospel. Neither history, nor humanity, nor ages, nor nature offer me anything with which I am able to compare it or to explain it. Here everything is extraordinary.”

The theory of evolution has been a bone of contention for the past 150 years. But is it true? This is a question Sylvia Baker examines here.

The original material was first published in Evangelical Times in 1976. It has been in almost continuous publication since then and has been translated into many languages. Many people have found it a very helpful introduction to origins issues. This is the 3rd edition of “Bone of Contention”, with updates and new material throughout its pages.

The Moral Law

There is much confusion amongst Christians over the role of the moral law. Some raise objections of 'legalism' others say that 'love' has replaced 'law'. Some accept that the moral law applies to Christians but mistakenly believe it has no relevance to anyone else.

In his excellent booklet Professor John L. Mackay shows from the Bible that the moral law still applies and is bound up with the preservation of ordered life.
